Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, a former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has expressed concerns about the recent public comments made by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour. Prof. Ofosu Marfo believes the MP’s remarks may be strategically aimed at enhancing his political profile, rather than addressing crucial educational issues.
During a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, on April 10, 2025, Prof. Ofosu Marfo argued that if Rev. Ntim Fordjour were truly focused on the country’s education system, he would have directed his attention to pressing issues in the sector, given his previous role in education. Instead, the MP has made controversial allegations regarding government involvement in cocaine smuggling.
“If the MP did not have political ambitions behind his comments, I would have expected him to focus on pressing educational matters, especially since he has previously served in the education sector,” Prof. Ofosu Marfo remarked. “Rather than raising issues of drug trafficking, he should be addressing vital concerns such as the school feeding programme and other educational initiatives.”
The former UTAG president also dismissed claims that Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s statements had damaged Ghana’s international reputation. Prof. Ofosu Marfo argued that the global community already has an in-depth understanding of the country’s affairs.
“The international community already knows more about us than we know about ourselves,” he said. “Whatever is happening here, they are already aware of it.”
Prof. Ofosu Marfo further suggested that Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s political aspirations might mirror the path of Ghana’s Foreign Minister, who he claimed had similarly made a name for himself by taking a bold approach in the political arena.
He added, “Whenever the issue is raised, they say he’s now on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior, but that does not mean he should disregard his educational background.”
