There are several calls on the incumbent NPP government to reconstruct or maintain the Accra-Tema Motorway due to its deplorable state.
The motor is deplorable to the extent that, deadly cracks and potholes have taken over the country’s busiest highway. A lot of road signs are not working and these many other factors have claimed many lives while a lot more are injured via accidents.
However, the minister for Road and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta has said that, as a result of many challenges facing his government, he cannot specifically tell when exactly the Accra-Tema Motto way which was built in the 60’s will be reconstructed.
He made this known as a response to a question from, Kofi Adams enquiring when the Tema Motto way will be reconstructed, during a public hearing of the public accounts committee to consider the 2020 Auditor General report.
“As much as government plan to reconstruct that road, there are few challenges and I believe very soon we shall go over those challenges to start work. But I wouldn’t put any specific date on it but we’ve gone very far and it may not be long at all from now, work on the motorway will start….”
According to the Tema Office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), 14 lives were lost in road traffic crashes (RTC) that occurred on the Accra-Tema Motorway between January 1 and December 30, 2021.
About 145 others also suffered varying degrees of injuries within the same period.
The statistics indicated that 37 RTCs were recorded on the motorway as of December 30, 2021.
Road accidents remain a problem of concern on the 19.5km dual carriageway that links the Port City of Tema to Accra.
