I was unaware of MPs mustering support for any candidate – Kyei-Mensah

Former Majority Leader and ex-Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has dismissed claims that organised groups within Parliament influenced support for particular candidates during the New Patriotic Party’s internal elections.

Speaking on Asempa FM, he stated that he was not aware of any coordinated effort among Members of Parliament to back specific aspirants during his tenure as Majority Leader.

“I am not aware of any group in Parliament during my time as Majority Leader. No one ever approached me to ask MPs to support a particular candidate,” he said.

Commenting on the 2023 NPP presidential primary, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that the outcome was shaped by broader political factors rather than organised parliamentary support. According to him, internal dissatisfaction within the party and shifts in the contest played a key role.

“I was surprised by Ken’s 37 per cent. I believe he benefited from the general discontent within the system and from Alan withdrawing from the race,” he noted, referring to Kennedy Agyapong.

He suggested that similar conditions may not prevail in the next contest, even among those who have publicly declared their support for particular candidates.

“It is possible that things may not be the same this time, even among those who have openly declared their support,” he added.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further emphasised that public endorsements alone do not determine success in the party’s internal elections.

“If people trust you, it doesn’t matter who publicly declares support for you—you will win,” he concluded.
