“I was scared to become a father as a student, but I took responsibility” — KiDi

Ghanaian singer-songwriter Dennis Nana Dwamena, popularly known as KiDi, has shared how learning that he was going to be a father while still at university became one of the most challenging moments of his life, admitting the news left him overwhelmed long before he found fame.

Speaking on the Konnected Minds Podcast, the award-winning musician said he was still searching for his identity and trying to build a career in music when he discovered he was expecting his first child. According to him, the unexpected responsibility weighed heavily on his mind and even affected his academic performance.

“I was scared. I was in uni. I was scared. I was shaken. It did affect my education because I had resits. It was a thing that was heavy on my thoughts. I wasn’t even KiDi then. I was trying to figure out what my sound was going to be,” he said.

The ‘Lomo Lomo’ hitmaker said the thought of raising a child while he was still trying to establish himself was difficult to comprehend.

“So how to raise a child? I was still even raising myself. I was still trying to figure out my place in the world. So, to come and add another human to that equation was such a scary concept,” he added.

KiDi credited his family, especially his mother, for helping him navigate that difficult chapter of his life and giving him the confidence to keep pushing forward.

“One thing that kept me going was I always find a way, no matter how difficult it was. I knew I had my family. I knew I had those people behind me. My mom was always going to show up for me,” he noted.

He revealed that their encouragement inspired him to complete his university education and successfully pass his resit examinations.

“It helped me to finish my education. I even took some vim to go and write my resits,” he said.

The musician also disclosed that although he learned about the pregnancy at an early stage, he could not be physically present throughout the pregnancy because he and the child’s mother were living in separate countries.

“I wasn’t able to be there until he was actually born because we were in different countries,” he clarified.

KiDi has previously spoken about balancing fatherhood with his music career, and his latest revelation offers fans a deeper look into the personal struggles he endured before becoming one of Ghana’s most celebrated Afrobeats artistes.
