Kumawood actress Ama Lista has provided insight into her decision to shift her focus from mainstream movies to YouTube skits. During an interview on Oyerepa TV’s Cinifie Showbiz, Ama Lista explained that the atmosphere in mainstream movie production often involves individuals asserting their authority and flaunting their talents. However, she found a refreshing change in the YouTube community.
Ama Lista shared that her experience working with renowned YouTubers Ama Tundra and Kasawale was incredibly welcoming. Their warm reception and support motivated her to become a part of the UGC family and continue creating skits on YouTube.
“When I started YouTube skits with Ama Tundra and Kasawale at UGC, the kind of treatment they gave me made me love being with them more than where I was (mainstream movies). Because in the mainstream movie industry, everyone feels he or she is a star, and everyone shows off but the welcome and how they (UGC) talked to me, I was very okay so I decided to be with them.” Ama Lista told Martha Joyce, host of Cinifie Showbiz.
The rise of YouTube skits in Ghana has had a profound effect on the entertainment industry. Traditional mainstream movies, particularly those produced by Kumawood, have experienced a significant decline in viewership and popularity. This shift in audience preference has compelled several prominent actors and actresses, including Kwadwo Nkansah Liwin, Kwaku Manu, Agyakoo, Vivian Jill (Abrewa Maafia/Yaa Basabasa), and the famous Ghanaian actor and YouTuber Ras Nene, also known as Akabenezer, to redirect their efforts towards creating skits.
These talented individuals have recognized the changing landscape of entertainment and have adapted accordingly.
