Former MCE for Offinso South Municipal Hon. Haruna Yussif has disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not hesitate to scrap the office of the Office of the Special Prosecutor if elected to power in 2024.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor of Ghana was established after an act of the Parliament of Ghana passed the Office of Special Prosecutor Bill in 2017 and put it to the ground in 2018.
The office serves as an independent investigating and prosecution body to make inquiries into corruption, bribery, or other criminal cases at the national level, whether they be in the public or private sector.
The core objective of the Ghanaian prosecutor’s office is to investigate and bring charges against individuals suspected of corruption and corruption-related crimes. This includes recovering illicit gains, curbing corruption, and promoting transparent, responsible, and credible governance aligned with the constitution’s goals.
Hon. Haruna speaking in a panel discussion on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel emphasized that the office would not achieve any significant results, saying it was just one of the useless offices created by the government under President Akuffo Addo’s government.
“Look, this is one of the most useless offices created by the President, which I know will never yield anything beneficial in this country,” he said.
He further stated that the office, since its establishment by the NPP, has failed to successfully prosecute a single case in the country, and he believes the NDC, when elected into power, will scrap this office.
“I know the NDC will just have to scrap this particular office because it has proven to act in futility since its establishment in the country,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a recent parliamentary session, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, expressed his total dissatisfaction with the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing it as something that can never yield any good results in the fight against corruption in Ghana.
He therefore emphasized that the office would not achieve anything good in this country and rather advised the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, as a matter of urgency to resign to save the little reputation and integrity left for him.
