“I nearly disgraced myself because of English” – Yaw Dabo recounts interview experience

Kumawood actor Yaw Dabo, known in private life as Samuel Yaw Dabo, has shared a humorous moment when he had to abandon an English conversation during a radio interview because he struggled to match the presenter’s fluency.

Recounting the experience, the actor said the incident happened when he appeared on Kumasi-based Luv FM for a sports-related discussion. He explained that although he attempted to engage the host in English, the presenter’s confidence and command of the language left him searching for the right words.

Yaw Dabo said he eventually decided to switch the conversation to Twi rather than force himself into a discussion where he could not fully express his thoughts.

“I nearly disgraced myself at Luv FM. The lady’s English was on another level; it was so fluent and polished. Even me, who had just returned from America, couldn’t match up. So I had to humbly beg her, ‘Please, can we switch to Twi?’” he recalled.

The actor explained that his decision was not out of embarrassment but a desire to communicate effectively, adding that speaking a language comfortably is more important than struggling to impress others.

He noted that the switch to Twi made the interview more enjoyable and allowed him to express himself better, while jokingly suggesting that he would return another time more prepared for an English exchange.

Yaw Dabo, who is known for his comic roles and unique personality in Ghana’s movie industry, has over the years become one of Kumawood’s most recognisable faces, often sharing relatable experiences from his career and personal life.
