President John Dramani Mahama has firmly reiterated his position on LGBTQI (‘Trumutrumu) matters, emphasizing his commitment to upholding traditional family values.
Addressing a gathering of clergy during Mahama Fellowship with the Clergy on Friday, February 28, 2025, the President stated that he believes in the existence of only two genders—male and female—and that marriage should strictly be between a man and a woman.
“I, as a Christian, uphold the principles and values that only two genders exist—man and woman. And that marriage is between a man and a woman,” he asserted during his address to the gathering of religious leaders.
The former president further revealed that he had engaged in discussions with the Speaker of Parliament regarding the renewal of the expired Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
He emphasized that such a bill should be introduced by the government rather than through a private member’s motion, signaling his hope for renewed legislative action on the matter.
“I’ve spoken with the Speaker of Parliament. A renewal of the expired Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill should be a bill that’s introduced by the government rather than a private members’ motion. It’s my hope that, that consultation will see a renewed proper family values bill,” he stated.
Mahama’s remarks come at a time when Ghana continues to engage in national discourse over LGBTQI rights and legislation. The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, initially proposed to criminalize LGBTQI activities and advocacy, has been a subject of debate both locally and internationally, drawing responses from human rights organizations, religious bodies, and lawmakers.
