Former Majority Leader and ex-Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has admitted that he anticipated a tough battle for the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia going into the 2024 presidential election.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with Kwesi Parker Wilson, the seasoned politician revealed that despite his hopes for victory, he knew winning the election would be a daunting task.
“At the tip of my eye, even though I was strongly hoping we could win the elections, I knew it was going to be a very tall order. It was going to be a difficult enterprise to win. But if we had upped our game, we could have won,” he stated.
Kyei Mensah-Bonsu further explained that history was not on the side of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), as no political party in Ghana has been able to secure three consecutive terms in office since the country’s return to democratic rule in 1992, except for the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, who succeeded himself in 1996.
“Since 1992, apart from Rawlings, no political party has been able to break the eight. It’s been difficult. No party has achieved that, but that doesn’t mean it is impossible,” he added.
His comments come in the wake of the NPP’s electoral defeat, which saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) return to power under former President John Mahama. Many political analysts have attributed the loss to multiple factors, including economic challenges and voter dissatisfaction.
