“I don’t want to go blind” – Maame Gyanwaa appeals to Ibrahim Mahama for help

Veteran Ghanaian actress Mavis Yeboah, popularly known as Maame Gyanwaa, has appealed to philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama and other well-meaning Ghanaians to help fund treatment for an eye condition that has left her without sight in one eye.

The actress, who has battled retinal artery occlusion for several years, disclosed that she has completely lost vision in her left eye and is now dependent on her right eye, which she says occasionally goes blank.

Maame Gyanwaa said her treatment requires about GH¢6,000 every month, a financial burden her children, who have been supporting her, can no longer sustain because of their own financial difficulties.

“Any prominent person who hears my story, please, I am appealing to you to help me. I do not want to go blind and be confined indoors for the rest of my life. Our father, Ibrahim Mahama, I know this is something you can do for me. I am also appealing to anyone else who hears my story to please come to my aid.

“My children are not financially stable at the moment, and they cannot afford the GH¢6,000 I need every month for my treatment,” she pleaded.

The actress explained that her financial struggles have made it difficult to maintain the treatment, with her limited resources often going towards necessities such as food and rent.

She recalled that her acting career once provided her with enough income to build a house, but she eventually sold the property to pay for the medical care of her son, who battled cancer before his death.

With no steady means to cover the recurring medical bills, Maame Gyanwaa fears losing the sight in her remaining eye if she cannot continue treatment.

She has therefore appealed to the government, Ibrahim Mahama and other individuals capable of helping to intervene, saying financial support could make the difference between preserving her remaining sight and going completely blind.
