Professor Charles Marfo, a distinguished lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has cast doubt on whether President Akufo-Addo will give his approval to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
The bill, officially titled the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Act, was passed by Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
This legislation aims to prohibit LGBT activities and criminalize their promotion, advocacy, and funding.
During an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Professor Marfo shared his belief that the President may only approve the bill for political expediency.
“I don’t see Akufo-Addo agreeing to the anti-LGBT bill despite its passage by parliament. Recently, I saw people accusing him of avoiding declaring his stance on LGBTQ. Nana Addo can say he opposes it due to how he was raised. However, Nana Addo is a leader who represents Ghana on international platforms and the country’s impact on the international market is minimal. The president will only sign the bill for political reasons.”
Professor Marfo emphasized the importance of returning to our cultural roots to address these issues, rather than relying on the anti-LGBT bill.
