“I didn’t know anything” – Fancy Gadam on Sarkodie’s ‘Total Cheat’ verse

Ghanaian musician Mujahid Ahmed Bello, popularly known as Fancy Gadam, has revealed that Michael Owusu Addo, known professionally as Sarkodie, recorded his verse on their hit song ‘Total Cheat’ without his knowledge of what had been prepared.

Fancy Gadam said the collaboration was handled separately, with the two artistes never meeting in the studio during the recording process. He explained that after completing the chorus and his first verse, he sent the song to Sarkodie and waited for the rapper to add his contribution.

It was only after Sarkodie had finished recording that Fancy Gadam returned to the studio to fill another portion of the song.

“I recorded the chorus and my first verse, then I sent it to him. When he was done with his verse, my manager said there was a space that I needed to fill, so I should come and do a second verse,” he recounted.

According to Fancy Gadam, he was particularly impressed when he eventually heard Sarkodie incorporating Dagbani into his rap, insisting that neither he nor his team had any prior knowledge of what the rapper was going to deliver.

“It was so amazing. My team and I were shouting. I was not there. I didn’t meet him in the studio. I didn’t know anything about the lyrics,” he said.

The northern music star further disclosed that his discovery of producer Posigee’s fluency in Dagbani led him to believe that he could have assisted Sarkodie with the language.

“I didn’t know Posigee was a Dagomba man until I went to the studio and he was speaking Dagbani to me, and I was surprised. And Posigee is Sarkodie’s producer, so I am sure he taught him,” he said.

Fancy Gadam also recalled the impact of Sarkodie’s use of the popular expression “Tiku Zami, Tibi dwara”, meaning “We stand firm, we don’t shake.” The phrase struck a chord with listeners, particularly in Tamale and other parts of northern Ghana, adding to the appeal of the collaboration.

‘Total Cheat’ subsequently became one of the notable collaborations associated with Fancy Gadam, while Sarkodie’s attempt to rap in Dagbani drew considerable attention from fans. Fancy Gadam’s latest revelation now offers a glimpse into how unexpectedly that much-praised part of the record came together.
