The Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho in the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwame Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has raised questions over the recent dramatic fluctuations in the dollar-to-cedi exchange rate, cautioning against attributing the cedi’s appreciation to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the MP expressed his bewilderment at the exchange rate’s rapid shift, stating: “The dollar ratio went to 16 on Thursday dawn and later came back to 10 in the early hours of the day. I just don’t know what the NDC is doing behind the scenes that brought it down like that.”
Despite his remarks, Asafo-Adjei Ayeh was quick to clarify that he does not believe the NDC has any real control over the currency’s performance and warned against giving the party undue credit for the cedi’s recent strength.
His comments come amid growing political debate over economic management and the performance of the Ghanaian cedi, which has experienced volatility in recent months.
