A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr. Dennis Sarkodie Owusu has opined that housing deficit in Ghana is a major component of corruption.
Speaking last Friday on Oyerepa TV morning dubbed; OBT’ the lecturer stated that, people, especially workers are unable to survive with the meagre salaries the country offers them therefore they are invariably compelled to find crooked means (corruption) to achieve whatever they want.
“I can emphatically say that the high rate of corruption is as a result of housing deficiency because workers earn less amount of money which can’t cater for their family nor own a house. They find crooked means to achieve what they want.” He narrated.
Meanwhile, a preliminary report from the Ghana Statistical Service’s, 2021 population and housing census (PHC) indicates, there are about 2.1 million metal containers, kiosks, and structures in the country.
But, Mr. Dennis Sarkodie Owusu supposes, the millions of metals and wooden structures (Kiosk) in this country are due to the high cost of plots of land and other building materials.
However, Mr. Dennis has charged the government of Ghana to build more houses for the public to rent.
He further charged the government to introduce a national housing policy that will guide the citizens to plan before they build in order to help minimize improper building structures in the country.
