Former head of the Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Ghana and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has expressed his strong opposition to the signing of the anti-gay bill by the President.
This comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo decided to wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling before making a decision on the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ Bill recently passed by Parliament.
Speaking in an interview with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel on Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Tuesday morning, the political scientist explained that the signing of this bill into law will only violate the rights and freedoms of some people who are also citizens of this country.
“Why violate so many rights and freedoms of your people just because of one thing you want to protect because these people are also Ghanaians and the question is where do you expect them to go because they are homosexuals,” he said.
Justifying that there is no law governing morality as some Ghanaians are suggesting, activities of the LGBTQ community go against our principles as a Christian-dominated country.
“God did not create this world for only heterosexual people so why allow activities of a minority group to determine the fate of this country,” he stated.
He argued that it will be best for the government, stakeholders, and all Ghanaians to take some time and analyze this issue critically because this bill, when passed, will violate the rights and freedoms of all these people.
“Homosexuals are also part of God’s creation and they cannot be deprived of their rights and freedoms as stated by the constitution, which is the supreme law of our land,” he added.
However, Dr. Amoako opined that he is optimistic that the court will bring out a fruitful verdict on this matter and that will prevent the President from signing this bill into law.
