The families of former Achimota School students Davida Asante Boateng and Lilian Akorli have confirmed the arrest of the driver responsible for their deaths.
The suspect was apprehended following a police pursuit on the night of the tragic incident, which occurred on March 7.
According to witnesses, the driver failed to stop after hitting the victims, forcing bystanders to rush them to the hospital. They arrived at the medical facility at approximately 12:02 AM.
Davida and Lilian, both former residents of Stopford House and members of the Old Achimotan Association (OAA24), were returning to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) after attending a bonfire celebration at Achimota School when they were struck along the Achimota Highway.
Davida’s aunt, Alice Safoa, recounted how the driver was eventually apprehended.
“The accident happened around 10:30 PM. According to the police, they arrested the driver after a chase. However, hospital staff revealed that he had sought refuge there, fearing an attack from eyewitnesses. Following his arrest, he was taken to the hospital due to ill health but has since recovered and been placed in police custody,” she told Citi News
Charlotte Otchere, a close friend of Lilian, shared fond memories of their time together.
“She was my classmate and a very good friend. We sat near each other in class. We had our bad days, but we were okay before we completed school,” she reminisced.
The tragic accident has left family, friends, and the Achimota community mourning the loss of the two young women.
