Hawa Koomson elected NPP National Women’s Organiser

Former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been elected National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Hawa Koomson secured 783 votes to defeat her sole contender, Hajia Safia Mohammed, who polled 429 votes at the party’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3.

Her election marks a return to a prominent national leadership position within the NPP after her three-term tenure as a Member of Parliament.

Hawa Koomson first entered Parliament in 2012 as the NPP’s representative for Awutu Senya East and retained the seat in the 2016 and 2020 general elections.

She also served in the Akufo-Addo administration, initially as Minister for Special Development Initiatives before becoming Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in 2021.

However, her parliamentary career came to an end in the 2024 general election when she lost the Awutu Senya East seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

Her election as National Women’s Organiser now places her at the helm of the NPP’s women’s wing, with responsibility for mobilising and coordinating women across the party’s structures nationwide.

The NPP National Delegates Conference brought together 7,163 delegates from across the country to elect the party’s national officers.

The Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of delegates with 1,122, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 773 and the Eastern Region with 732.

The Savannah Region had the lowest representation with 184 delegates, while the Western North Region recorded 223 delegates.

According to the delegate figures, 2,745 delegates were eligible to vote in the Youth Organiser election, 1,275 in the Women’s Organiser contest and 858 in the NASARA Organiser race.
