Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam has blamed the two leading political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for interfering in the recruitment process of the Security services in Ghana.
According to him, the NDC and NPP do not allow these security services to have total control of the recruitment process in the sense that they invariably submit to the services people they (politicians) want to be enlisted.
Reacting to a recent report from the Ghana Police Service that some of its officers have been arrested and reminded over multiple bullion van robberies, Andy Kamkam stated that, the NDC and NPP are the bane of the criminals in the various security services.
Speaking in an interview on ‘Oyerepa Breakfast Show’, hosted by Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, he said, politicians invariably submit their relatives and party members into the security service. And once these recruits are sent, authorities of the services are unable to do a thorough background checks to know if they have bad or criminal records.
When Kankam was asked if the crooks in the various security services could be removed, he said, “NPP and NDC should allow the security services to have control of the recruitment process.”
He suggested that, the security services should be allowed to go back and implement the olden day’s recruitment processes where they use to do enough background checks, thus check criminal records and everything about every single recruit.
The editor advised that in as much as politicians want their relatives, party members and friends to be employed, they must ensure that they qualify academically, they are of sound mind, have good track record and are without criminal records.
“In much as you want a relative of yours to be recruited into the security services make sure these people are qualified academically, they’re of sound mind, they have good track record and are without any criminal record.”
However, he urged the citizenry to collaborate with the security services of the nation to attain adequate protection.
“We can only provide security when there is collaboration between the citizenry and the police service.”
