The Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir (KT) Hammond, has made a statement regarding the fate of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central.
According to the Minister, Gyakye Quayson will face imprisonment, similar to the former MP for Bawku Central, Adamu Dramani Sakande, who was imprisoned for falsely claiming Burkinabe and British citizenships.
During an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson, the host of Oyerepa Breakfast Time, K.T. Hammond emphasized that the case of Adamu Sakande closely resembles that of Gyakye Quayson, which is why he believes the latter is destined for prison.
He explained, “There is a legal concept called precedence in court… This is exactly what happened with Adamu Sakande. He was expelled from parliament by the same NDC (National Democratic Congress) members who took him to court. He was subsequently imprisoned and eventually passed away. It is the same situation.”
He continued, “There is a lot of noise surrounding Gyakye Quayson’s swearing-in. I urged the former deputy Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, to advise the gentleman (Quayson) that we have witnessed this scenario in parliament before. He should leave parliament before he faces imprisonment.”
Hon. Hammond stressed the importance of precedence, drawing parallels between the Adamu Sakande case and Gyakye Quayson’s situation.
Both individuals faced legal consequences for holding multiple citizenships. Although Quayson has renounced his other citizenship and is now solely Ghanaian, the focus remains on the previous laws he violated.
In addition, KT Hammond, who represents Adansi Asokwa, criticized Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, for condemning the Supreme Court’s ruling that resulted in Quayson’s removal.
