A group called the New Ghana Social Justice Forum has given President John Dramani Mahama a one-month ultimatum to remove Mr. Martin Kwaku Ayisi as CEO of the Minerals Commission.
The forum alleges that Ayisi’s tenure has been marred by corruption scandals and administrative malfeasance, despite which he remains in office.
According to Yahaya Alhassan, president of the New Ghana social justice forum, Ayisi’s leadership has led to the hasty issuance of 300 mining licenses to political affiliates without due diligence. The forum is calling for an immediate investigation and revocation of these licenses.
Furthermore, the forum blames Ayisi’s tenure for the worst era of illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana, resulting in unprecedented water pollution levels across the country. They emphasize the need for transparent governance and accountability in managing Ghana’s mineral resources.
The forum recommends appointing individuals with extensive experience in the mining sector, such as Dr. Tony Aubynn, to steer the Minerals Commission towards growth.
The group is confident that appointing Dr. Tony Aubynn as CEO of the Minerals Commission will significantly boost the Commission’s capacity to tackle mining challenges and drive Ghana’s development.
By appointing Dr. Aubynn, the group believes that the Minerals Commission will be better positioned to promote transparent governance, accountability, and sustainable development in the mining sector.
