The Member of Parliament for Asunafo South in the Ahafo Region has advised the government to close down schools if there is no food for the students.
There have been several reports of food shortages in various schools in the country.
But speaking with Kwesi Parker-Wilson host of Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the Ranking Member on the Food and Agriculture Committee of Parliament blamed the shortage of food on the government’s poor implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
He lamented poor farmers are not benefiting from the PFJ program.
He asserted that the country spends over GH¢2 billion on food imports, a situation he believes is contributing to the fast depreciation of the cedi.
“We are blessed with so much fertile land yet we are not producing enough. Another challenge is that 50,000 metric tons of fertilizers were smuggled into neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso and as we speak, we don’t have a bag of maize as a buffer. We will go hungry if there should be any external shock in the country,” he said.
He suggested that our school should have farms that can also provide them with food.
“That Planting for food and jobs cannot solve food situation in the school. Every school must have a farm and government should employ labourers to work on the farms, this can solve the food situation in the schools”. He proposed.
