The Government of Ghana has expressed its condolences to the people of Dagbon following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s sympathies to the Dagbon Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and Ghanaians.

President Mahama described the late traditional ruler as a respected leader whose reign contributed significantly to peace, unity and reconciliation within the Dagbon Kingdom.

The government noted that Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II played an important role in restoring harmony to Dagbon after years of conflict, helping to create conditions for stability and development.

“His Majesty will be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace to Dagbon following years of conflict,” the statement said.

According to the government, the late overlord’s commitment to promoting unity, stability and the welfare of his people strengthened collaboration between traditional authorities and the state in advancing development in Dagbon and across Ghana.

“His unwavering commitment to unity, stability, and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between the traditional authorities and the Government in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana,” it added.

The government paid tribute to the late Yaa Naa’s contributions to national development, describing his leadership and legacy as a source of inspiration for future generations.

“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation,” the statement noted.

It added:

“May his wisdom, leadership, and dedication to peace continue to inspire future generations. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

The death of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II was announced on Monday, July 13, 2026, following the performance of customary rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
