The government of Ghana, through the ministry of sanitation and water resources, has taken steps to inculcate the culture of maintenance in the management of schools in the Ashanti region in order to prolong the life span of the projects (toilet facilities in schools) constructed under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water (GAMA) and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Projects.
Speaking at a stakeholder forum to solicit ideas on how to operate and maintain the facilities constructed in the Greater Kumasi Area, Ing. George Asiedu, coordinator for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA) and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project (GKMA), noted that about 129 toilet facilities have been constructed in schools in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area under the project, of which 20% are operating, all aimed at improving sanitation.
“The government is building toilet facilities for schools in Kumasi. We are building 129 toilets for different schools, and all of them will be handed over by November. Currently, we have provided 20 percent to some schools, and the rest are under construction. We don’t have to wait for the school to mismanage the facilities. Today we are engaging the management of the school to manage the facilities after we hand them over to them.” He said.
