The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the government has disbursed GHC23.6 million in allowances to Assembly Members for April and May.
Each member received GHC1,300 per month to support their duties and enhance their effectiveness.
This payment fulfils a pledge made by President John Mahama during his second term, reaffirming the government’s commitment to decentralisation. As part of this commitment, 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) is being transferred directly to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
The initiative aims to strengthen local governance by empowering local authorities, encouraging grassroots participation in decision-making, and improving service delivery. It also seeks to tackle challenges stemming from the re-centralisation of resources.
By supporting Assembly Members and reinforcing decentralised governance, the government is demonstrating its dedication to promoting grassroots development and engaging citizens in the governance process.
