President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is preparing to begin the procurement process for the construction of a new airport in Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region.

According to the President, the proposed airport is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the country’s transport infrastructure, improve connectivity and transform the Upper West Region into a key commercial and logistics hub in northern Ghana.

He disclosed that the necessary project documents have been submitted to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for approval. Once authorization is granted, the government will proceed with procurement for the project.

“We are improving transport and logistics all over the country, including the railways, the roads and air travel. And as you would have heard, we are currently about to go to the Public Procurement Authority for authorization to begin procurement for the new airport in Wa,” President Mahama stated.

He noted that the strategic location of the Upper West Region, which serves as one of Ghana’s gateways to the Sahel, makes investment in modern transport infrastructure essential for boosting trade, enhancing regional integration and stimulating economic growth.

The President further explained that the new airport is expected to improve access to the region, facilitate business and investment, and support the government’s wider infrastructure development agenda.

President Mahama made the announcement on Wednesday, July 8, when members of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

The proposed airport has been widely welcomed by residents and stakeholders in the region, who have long advocated for improved air transport services to help unlock the area’s economic potential.
