The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has emphasized the party’s push for electoral reform to prevent government interference in election outcomes.
Speaking at NDC’s 33rd anniversary celebration, Mr Asiedu Nketiah referenced a past incident where a government allegedly manipulated election results by replacing the Electoral Commissioner.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the incident involved a government that lost an election, but before the sole Electoral Commissioner could announce the results, an announcement was made claiming the Electoral Commission couldn’t be found. Subsequently, another person, unrelated to the election process, was appointed to declare the government side as winners.
To prevent such incidents, the NDC proposes replacing the sole Electoral Commissioner system with a seven-member commission.
This would ensure that no single government can control the commission’s decisions, as members would retire and be replaced in a staggered manner.
