An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another injured following an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on personnel stationed at the post.
The deceased officer has been identified as Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed, who reportedly died instantly from gunshot wounds. His colleague, AICOII Oppong Daniel, sustained severe injuries to the jaw and back and is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
Police investigators at the scene reportedly retrieved AK-47 shell casings and a GIS service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.
A joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS, was immediately deployed to the area.
Authorities say investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack and to apprehend those responsible. Officials have assured that updates will be provided as inquiries progress.
