The Member of Parliament for Trobu, Hon. Gloria Owusu, has issued a strong call to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Armah Kofi Buah, urging him to rise to the task of fighting illegal mining (galamsey) with decisive leadership rather than public emotion.
This follows the Minister’s emotional reaction earlier today, where he was seen shedding tears over the ongoing galamsey crisis and his expressed frustration with its complexity.
Trobu MP, Hon. Gloria Owusu, acknowledged the emotional burden of public office but stressed that Ghana needs results-driven leadership, especially on such a critical national issue.
“With all due respect to Hon. Armah Kofi Buah, this is not the time to cry. This is the time to act. Galamsey is destroying our lands, polluting our water bodies, and robbing future generations of their heritage. You campaigned on solving this issue. You were appointed to lead, so lead,” she said.
Hon. Gloria Owusu emphasized that the galamsey menace was central to the campaign messaging of both the government and opposition during the 2024 elections, and the people of Ghana expect results and not regrets.
“If the Minister feels overwhelmed by the responsibility, then perhaps the President must appoint someone with the political will to take bold action. The Ministry doesn’t need a mourner; it needs a minister who is ready to confront illegal mining with firmness and vision,” the Trobu MP added.
She further called for transparent enforcement of mining laws, the prosecution of powerful individuals behind galamsey operations and community-based environmental restoration programs.
Hon. Gloria Owusu reaffirmed her commitment to speaking truth to power and championing the voices of her constituents and all Ghanaians who deserve bold, effective governance.
