The Ghanaian Diaspora Union in Europe, representing over 5,800 committed members, has appealed to presidential candidates in Ghana’s upcoming elections to commit to reducing import duties by at least 50%.
At a press briefing, Union President Ibrahim Isshak emphasized that excessive import duties and taxes at Ghanaian ports are crippling businesses and stifling trade and entrepreneurship among the diaspora community.
Ibrahim Isshak stressed that the measures at the ports, instead of Fostering growth, are stifling trade and Entrepreneurship among the diaspora community whose seek to contribute to Ghana’s economy.
He further added that the Diaspora Community is eager to contribute more actively Ghanaian growth, however they want government to reduce excessive import duties and taxes to encourage Diaspora investment.
Madam Sandra Amponsah, an Executive Member of the Diaspora Union in Europe, sounding the alarm on corrupt customs officers in Ghana.
She is calling on the government to keep a close eye on these officers, who are allegedly harassing importers and demanding hefty bribes, even after goods have been cleared from the port. “This extortion racket is threatening the livelihoods of business owners and undermining trust in the system.”
The practices described by Madam Amponsah are not only unethical but also harmful to Ghana’s economy. By demanding bribes and seizing goods, customs officers are disrupting commerce and discouraging investment from the diasporan community.
To address this issue, Madam Amponsah is advocating for urgent reforms to ensure transparency and accountability at all levels.
