Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis have signed an additional bilateral labour agreement aimed at securing improved conditions of service for Ghanaian nurses recruited to work in the Caribbean nation.

Under the agreement, Ghanaian nurses deployed to Saint Kitts and Nevis will be entitled to legally protected enhanced salaries, health insurance, rent allowances and end-of-service benefits, among other labour rights.

The agreement was signed in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr Geoffrey Hanley.

Mr Ablakwa said the agreement reflects Ghana’s commitment to using diplomacy to secure tangible benefits for Ghanaian professionals working abroad.

He commended Ghanaian professionals for their contributions internationally, noting that their skills and expertise continue to attract demand from countries around the world.

“Ghana will continue to pursue impactful diplomacy which benefits the people we serve,” he said in a post on Facebook.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening relations with Saint Kitts and Nevis.

“Long live our excellent Ghana-Saint Kitts and Nevis relations,” he added.

The agreement is expected to provide Ghanaian nurses recruited under the arrangement with clearer legal protections and improved employment conditions while strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the health and labour sectors.
