Ghana records 2,151 road crash deaths between January and September

Road crashes recorded across Ghana between January and September 2026 claimed the lives of 2,151 people and left another 12,230 injured, according to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The figures highlight the continued toll of road crashes on lives and livelihoods, with thousands of people affected within the first nine months of the year.

The MTTD recorded a total of 10,157 road crashes during the period, involving 17,197 vehicles.

Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, disclosed the figures in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

He said the statistics covered road crashes reported to the Police across all 25 police regions in Ghana.

According to ACP Obeng, police investigators responded to crash scenes across the country to assist victims and support emergency operations, including efforts to rescue people trapped in vehicles.

“I have with me data from January to September 2026. These are crashes that have been reported to us in our 25 police regions, and police investigators have responded to support Ghanaians who were trapped in these preventable crashes,” he said.

“10,157 crashes were recorded involving 17,197 vehicles. Sustained injuries were also 12,230, and persons who lost their lives in these preventable crashes were 2,151.”

ACP Obeng described the majority of the crashes as preventable, underscoring the need for motorists and other road users to exercise greater caution and adhere to road safety regulations.

The latest figures add to concerns over road safety in Ghana, as authorities continue to urge drivers and other road users to adopt safer practices to reduce fatalities and injuries on the country’s roads.
