The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has advised the government to cancel all nursing certificate programs in order to capitalize on the high demand for nurses in the United Kingdom.
Speaking with Akua Asieduwaa on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, he explained that most of the graduate nurses in Ghana are not qualified to be regarded as professional nurses because of the structure of their studies and the acquisition of their certificate.
He added that the government could add two years to the student nurses’ time in the training colleges so that, upon completion, they would come out as professional nurses.
Mr. Anto said also that nurses who do not have the professional qualifications may not enjoy the privileges nurses have in the UK when taken there, which may affect their standard of living.
He reiterated that the government should consider canceling certificate courses in the nursing field and focusing on training nurses to come out as professional nurses.
