The Ghana CSOs Platform on SDGs has expressed grave concern over the widespread illegal and irresponsible mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” and their devastating impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a press conference, Mrs. Beauty Emefa Narteh, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Anti-Corruption and Co-Chair of the SDGs Platform, emphasized the urgent need for action. She highlighted the far-reaching consequences of galamsey, affecting all SDG goals and threatening the livelihoods of rural communities, public health, food security, and the sustainability of natural resources.
The platform is calling for immediate action from President Nana Adodankwa Akufo-Addo, requesting the revocation of LI2426 and the withdrawal of all licenses granted for reconnaissance, prospecting, exploration, and mining in forests and protected reserves.
The group also demand the enforcement of illegal mining laws, prevention of mining in water bodies and forest reserves, and the implementation of the buffer zone policy.
The Ghana CSO Platform stands in solidarity with organized labor and urges all members and affiliates to support the strike action.
They emphasize the critical need for unity among Ghanaians to push the government to fulfill its duty to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.
