Ghana and China have reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations, as both nations celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Ghana-China Friendship Association (GHACHIFA) and 65 years of diplomatic ties.
The commemorative event, held in Accra, was themed: “Strengthening Ties and Inspiring Futures: 25 Years of Friendship, 65 Years of Partnership.”
In his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, hailed the enduring relationship between the two nations as one “rooted in history and nourished by mutual respect.”
He emphasised that the China-Ghana friendship has a long-standing tradition, nurtured by successive generations of leaders.
“The friendship between our two countries has taken deep root under the personal nurturing of past leaders,” Ambassador Tong said. He cited a pivotal moment in 1964, when Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai insisted on visiting Ghana despite tensions following an assassination attempt on President Kwame Nkrumah—an act that symbolised unwavering solidarity.
Mr. Augustus Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Adviser on the 24-hour Economy, in a speech read on his behalf, lauded GHACHIFA’s efforts in enhancing bilateral cooperation.
He emphasised Ghana’s determination to modernise its economy through infrastructure reform, job creation, and the attraction of long-term investment, referred to as “patient capital.”
Mr. Tanoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening strategic partnerships with countries like China, whose investments continue to play a critical role in Ghana’s development agenda.
The event brought together diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and cultural ambassadors, all of whom echoed the importance of preserving and advancing the strong relationship between the two nations.
