The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Identification Authority, Mr. Emmanuel Arthur, has cautioned the public not to pay any money for the acquisition of the Ghana card.

The Ghana Card is the national identity card that is issued by the Ghanaian authorities to Ghanaian citizens, both resident and non-resident, legal and permanent residents of foreign nationals. It is proof of the identity, citizenship, and residence of the holder.
The current version is in ID1 format and biometric.
It is issued by the National Identification Authority of Ghana and is hence regarded as a property of the country as such.

According to the Regional Director of the NIA, there have been some unidentifiable persons (goro boys) using dubious means to extort money from people acquiring the Ghana card.

In an interview with the host of Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, the regional director of the NIA, explicitly stated that there is no fee attached to new persons acquiring the Ghana card at the various district offices across the country.

While first-time registration for the Ghana Card will be free at all NIA’s offices, there is a statutory fee of GHS 34.50 for the replacement of a Ghana Card or for making changes in a person’s record (e.g., correction of name).

“For people who have not done it before, it’s free, but if you have had it before and lost it, and you want to replace it or make any changes to your details on the card, it will only cost you GH 34.50p and nothing more than that at all district levels,” he explained.

However, he added that people who wish to have their cards the same day will have to go for the premium service, which costs GH 280.00 for new registrants at the regional offices, and an update of your details, which includes a change of name, date of birth, or any other details, will also attract a fee of GH 110.00.

“There are also some people who wish to have it the same day for some purposes, and that goes for GH 280.00 for new applicants and GH 110.00 for changes of details on your card at our regional offices,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Mr. Arthur has cautioned the public not to pay any money more than that state amount at both the district and regional levels, respectively, to any person or persons claiming to aid you in acquiring the Ghana Card, which is free.
