Murky clouds hover around Asokore Mampong Municipality even under this scorching sun. They are dead silent. They didn’t see it coming. Never could they, not even a fraction for a second in their wildest imagination that their hope to see the son of their land lead government business in Asokore Mampong Municipality has been shuttered by nobody other than the man who once said he believed in the people of Asawase constituency, the president of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dunkwa Akufo Addo.
What crime did they commit for their obvious choice to elude the president only for him to nominate an outsider who didn’t want that position in the first place but was interested in vying for Kumasi’s Mayoral race? The quest to usurp Kennedy Kankam as Municipal Chief Executive to lead government business in Asokore Mampong Municipality is amazingly disappointing. A man who has no trial and no ties to the Municipality. He belongs to Nhyieaso, whose failed leadership as a member of Parliament resulted in only one term bid. A man who knows nothing about the Municipality and has never offered anything nor fought for nobody in the Municipality. He is not from the Municipality and will not know his whereabouts in the Municipality. He is a novice and cannot survive nor relate with the people of Asokore Mampong Municipality where he and they have conflicting cultural identities.
A municipality of more than 80% Muslims with ties to one another. A cluster of different communities with multiple languages but similar in cultural heritage and identity. They are loyal to one another and support one another. History has taught us that when one is betrayed, they all feel betrayed. This is a people who know one another and practice a collectivist culture. No outsider can break through them not even the most charismatic person who beams with elegance and oratory.
Mr. President, the people of Asokore Mampong Municipality have spoken clearly, they are not happy you ignored their indigenes to lead them in the Municipality as their Chief Executive. Those 18 hopefuls vying for the Municipal Chief Executive are amazingly brilliant and fiercely competent, loyal party activists who have ties with the grassroots and all levels of the party hierarchy. Their hard work and active participation of grass root work for the party and leadership roles in the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party nationwide is uncontestable.
They have been loyal party activists since childhood from pasting posters, knocking doors, and holding microphones on bigger platforms to campaign and canvass for votes for the New Patriotic Party. They were those involved in the door-to-door campaign. As if it wasn’t enough, they also went to pick people to be registered, voted and sent them back home which contributed to your victory. They guarded the ballot and saw its accurate counting and collation. Mr. President, you cannot forget the massive votes that were recorded which nearly unseated Hon Muntaka Mubarak in the 2016 general elections. They have all earned themselves a reputation that has chalked every nook and cranny of Asokore Mampong Municipality and that is the reason, the people of Asawase Constituency feel betrayed.
The chiefs, religious leaders, party hierarchies, and the entire Kukurudu family were solidly behind the 18 aspirants, and to wake up to this announcement of a different nomination is an absolute disappointment to the entire Municipality. So, ignoring the concerns of the Municipality is tantamount to disrespecting and turning your back against them. If the people whom you want their co-operation, have an adverse opinion about a nominee, then it is imperative to listen to them. They say the voice of the people is the voice of GOD.
The people of Asokore Mampong Municipality have not destroyed any party properties nor locked up the Municipality as other party supporters have done to register their dissatisfaction does not mean that, they take the neglect of their aspirants likely. They still love the party and hope that the right thing will be done to unify the Municipality.
To the people of Asawase constituency, they say that it is only when you stand at the threshold of death, that you can finally see your life. The New Patriotic Party recruits massive party militias/vigilantes from your communities, the Zongos. The Zongos only come to their mind when they want you to risk your lives for their selfish interest. They use you in all kinds of ‘dirty work’ to gain political positions. But history has always taught us that, they use and dump you after gaining power. The president threw dust in your eyes saying that he wanted to develop the Zongos, but what can he show when the whole ministry was set up for you?. He has scrapped it off.
The president wants to neglect you as he does every day. He doesn’t like you and will never like you. Why must you always fight and demonstrate to get what is rightfully yours anytime there are injustices meted out to you. You demonstrated against police brutalities and their killing of innocent souls only for the president to compensate the bereaved families. Yet the president calls himself a freedom fighter. How many times must you register your displeasure before you get what is rightfully yours?
To every well-meaning Ghanaian, join us in fighting for the right things to be done. We joined and fought for the president when J.A. Kufuor wanted to impose Alan Kyeremanteng on the New Patriotic Party, but we all came together to join forces to support him. Today, he sits pretty with all the privileges and has forgotten his story so soon. Let’s stop the president from setting a bad precedent no matter your political affiliations.
To Hon. Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, you are also the son of the land. You cannot sit idly by and watch the president impose somebody outside on your people. You have the moral mandate to put a stop to this by reaching out to the president or by supporting the assembly not to confirm him. It will be a big disgrace and insult to your values and creed as the son of the land and the blessings you have been to the people unless you are also a sellout.
To the good people of Asokore Municipality, kindly let the president know that he was ill-fed. The government owes you a lot and you deserve better than that, yet you have received nothing. Your courage and patience to keep calm are admirable but that will never reward you with the best nominee coming from your own. There will be no results from your inaction. You have the power of choice just like the president exhibited his choice. Reject him and send a message to the president that, we don’t like him and cannot work with him.
Keep rejecting him no matter how many times they bring him for confirmation. The ball is in your court now, and only you have the right to send that ball in any direction you deem it fit. This is the time for all of you to come together to show the world that, no matter the intimidation and elite influence they might use, you will always show loyalty and support for indigenes, and this is one of the times that, your well-known value as loyal people should come to play in supporting your nominee not what is imposed on you. Don’t forget what once said “Martin Luther King Jr.
In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
Signed
Akepae Michael Adombila (President)
