The Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has stated that he will not recommend to the government that houses be built for Konogo-Odumasi residents.
Many people have lost their lives as a result of illegal mining activities in the area. There have been several reports that indicate that the entire community is on the verge of caving in as a result.
Speaking on the Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the regional minister revealed that most of the people at Konogo-Odumasi do galamsey inside their bedrooms.
“We have arrested several people who are doing illegal mining in various homes in Konongo. Some people do it in their bedrooms. If you are doing gala in your bedroom and your house is collapsing, how do you want the government to build the house for you?” He quizzed.
The Minister lamented the people there are the cause of their own problem and they have to be condemned.
“Sometimes we should condemn the behaviour of some people.” “How can an individual do mining in their home and expect the government to come and build for them?”
“I will never recommend that the government build houses for them. Did they return the gold to the government? Where is the government going to get that money? They should build their houses themselves. “It is the duty of the government to protect you, but not to the extent that you do galamsey in your bedroom.” The minister told Kwesi Parker-Wilson, host of the show.
