As part of efforts to curb illegal mining activities on river Offin, the Atwima Mponua District Assembly in the Ashanti region in collaboration with Small Scale Mining Taskforce has burnt over 70 changfan machines.
The Taskforce from Accra and the District Assembly stormed Abompe, Beposo, Abesua and Agogoso villages over the weekend to arrest illegal miners (galamseyers).
Reports suggest the operation led to the burning of over 70 machines.
Speaking to the media, Mr Isaac Kofi Marfo, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atwima Mponua stated that none of the illegal miners was arrested but a number of their equipment were destroyed.
He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is committed to fighting illegal mining therefore will continue to pursue all galamsyers in his jurisdiction.
He however called on his colleague DCEs from Ahafo Ano South West and Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assemblies as well as stakeholders to support the government to fight galamsey.
