The Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) has welcomed the reported 20-year custodial sentence handed to NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for illegal mining-related offences, calling it a “significant milestone” in the fight against galamsey.

In a statement issued today, CFF-Ghana’s Executive Director, Richard Kasu, said the High Court’s decision shows that “the rule of law can prevail when institutions are allowed to function independently and without interference.”

“For far too long, politically connected individuals accused of illegal mining have been perceived as untouchable,” Kasu said. “This perception has weakened public confidence in the justice system and undermined efforts to protect Ghana’s forests, rivers, and farmlands.”

While praising the judgment, CFF-Ghana stressed that justice must be consistent and free from political considerations. The group called on the Office of the Attorney-General, the Special Prosecutor, the Police, the EPA, and the Minerals Commission to intensify investigations and ensure all perpetrators — including politicians, business executives, traditional leaders, and financiers — face equal accountability.

The foundation also urged government to strengthen enforcement of mining regulations, prosecute complicit public officials, recover proceeds from environmental crimes, and fund the restoration of degraded forests and polluted water bodies.

“Ghana cannot win the fight against galamsey unless there is sustained political will, institutional independence, and equal application of the law,” the statement said.

CFF-Ghana appealed to political parties and supporters to respect the judicial process, noting that every convicted person has the right to appeal. It added that the judiciary must be protected from political pressure and intimidation.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to good governance, environmental justice, and the rule of law, pledging to support efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
