The devastating effects of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, have sparked outrage and concern among Ghanaians. Renal diseases, spontaneous abortions, and birth defects are on the rise, while water bodies are being destroyed, and the fishing industry is losing jobs.
Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, speaking on behalf of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, emphasized that the crisis is worse than the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged the President to invoke Article 31 and declare a state of emergency to address the situation swiftly.
The coalition, comprising labor unions, media, and other stakeholders, demands immediate action from the government. They stress that the proposals presented so far are inadequate and that concrete steps must be taken to save the country from the brink of extinction.
According to Kenneth Ashigbey, Galamsey’s impact is far-reaching, with severe consequences for the environment, human health, and the economy.
Adding that “the government must take responsibility and act decisively to address this crisis. The time for talk is over; it’s time for action.”
