More than 300 farmers at the Weija Irrigation Site in Tuba, in the Greater Accra Region, have protested against the Land Commission Ghana over the alleged sale of the Weija irrigation land in Tuba to landguards and private developers.
The farmers have lamented the encroachment on the site by landguards and private developers.
They claim that landguards have invaded portions of the 8,000-acre agricultural land, threatened their lives, destroyed crops, erected pillars, and allegedly sold parts of the land to private developers.
Addressing the media at a press conference in Tuba, the affected farmers expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that their livelihoods are under serious threat.
They warned that if immediate action is not taken, hundreds of families who depend on the irrigation project for survival could lose their primary source of income.
“We are appealing directly to the President and relevant state authorities to intervene and halt the process,” the farmers said.
Meanwhile, the lawyer for the Weija Irrigation Farmers Association, Mr. Paul Kumi, has urged the government to act swiftly to stop the encroachment and protect the farmers’ rights.
In response, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), Ms. Yvonne Mamle Addison, stated that the Authority maintains a zero-tolerance stance against the illegal takeover of irrigation lands. She described the situation as a serious threat to national food security and a risk to public investment.
