Six people have sustained injuries, while four others are in police custody, after officers from the Kokrobite District Police Headquarters allegedly assaulted taxi drivers during a funeral wake-keeping.
The incident occurred at the Kokrobite Goil Filling Station, where taxi drivers were helping direct the hearse carrying the remains of a colleague’s wife. The drivers were reportedly ensuring free traffic flow along the Kokrobite road when the confrontation began.
According to eyewitnesses, police officers accused the taxi drivers of blocking the road with their cars. One officer, identified as Sarpong, allegedly began assaulting the drivers with sticks, with other officers joining in instead of assisting with traffic control.
At least six people, including one passenger seated in a parked vehicle, sustained injuries. Four drivers, including the chairman of the Kokrobite Taxi Drivers Association, were arrested.
Speaking to Nana Ansah in an interview, some of the injured drivers said they did not understand why they were attacked. They claimed they were only assisting in directing the hearse when the police officers descended on them with sticks.
The drivers further alleged that this is not the first time officers from the Kokrobite District Command have harassed them. They accused the police of frequently extorting money from taxi and okada riders and resorting to intimidation when their demands are not met.
They are calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Interior Minister to take swift action against the officers and their commander at the Kokrobite District Command, warning that failure to do so will leave them with no choice but to “advise themselves.”
Meanwhile, journalists who attempted to gather the police’s side of the story were allegedly assaulted and chased away by the district station officer and his team.
