Government has received about 50 acres of land to set a military base at Afram Plains in the Eastern Region.
A delegation led by the Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong inspected the parcel of land on Tuesday at Akyemfour a suburb of MaameKrobo in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District.
Agoo News’ Ebenezer Kojo Nyavor reported that the land was freely offered by Kwahu Adontenhene who doubles as Chief of Abetifi Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III.
Addressing journalists, the Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong said “the people who are rearing the animals are farmers because cattle rearing are purely an economic activity, similarly the crop farmers are also engaging in economic activities and we should not deprive them of what they are doing.”
He said, “The farmers must enjoy out of their toil and sweat and so at the end of the day, all we require is for us to live interdependently and grow the community progressively, that is the reason why government is trying to engage and set up the forces here so that if there is any misunderstanding they will step in to help us to forestall peace”, adding that “this is our focus and why we are here today to ensure that we are able to consolidate them here and get the proper permanent stay.”
The Regional Minister commended the chief of Abetifi for giving over 50 acres of land to build a permanent operating base for the military.
Before the commencement of the military base, Seth Kwame Acheampong said a temporal accommodation for the officers has been provided at Kwanim, a nearby community of which the facility was also inspected.
The District Chief Executive for Afram Plains South Evans Kyei Ntiri speaking to the media expressed confident that security menace in the area will surely be a thing of the past.
He, therefore, maintained residents are committed to support the forces in order to achieve their target.
The Eastern Regional Minister was accompanied by officers from Ghana Armed Forces led by the General Officer Commanding the Southern Sector Brigadier General Michael Amoah, Director of Planning and Research Development Brigadier General Gyane Andoh Richard and a few others including Lt Col Baffour, Col Nyanteh and Lt Amponsah.
