Four people, including children, sustained injuries after a residential building collapsed at Adenta Newsite in Accra during Wednesday evening’s heavy rains.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed in a statement that the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.

The incident occurred near Da Yesu Asae Supermarket when a one-storey residential structure, comprising both ground-floor and upper-floor apartments, suddenly gave way and trapped five occupants beneath the rubble.

According to the GNFS, the victims included two women and three males, among them three children — a girl and two boys.

Before firefighters arrived at the scene, residents successfully rescued two injured occupants from the debris and transported them to hospital for medical attention.

Emergency personnel from the GNFS later rescued two more victims, bringing the total number of survivors recovered from the collapsed building to four. All four are reported to be receiving treatment.

Rescuers also managed to save a dog that had been trapped under the rubble.

Search and rescue efforts were still ongoing at the time of the latest update, as emergency teams continued working to locate a fifth occupant, a woman believed to remain trapped beneath the debris.

The collapse occurred during a heavy downpour that affected several parts of Accra, triggering flooding and causing significant disruptions across the city.

The GNFS praised residents for their prompt action in rescuing the first two victims before emergency responders arrived. The Service also acknowledged the contributions of other agencies supporting the ongoing rescue operation.

Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the building collapse, and investigations are expected to commence once rescue efforts are completed.
