Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Ahmad wrote.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, following an earlier tenure as the country’s military leader from 1983 to 1985. He was known for his strong anti-corruption agenda and his commitment to economic reform and national stability.
Details of his burial will be released by the family in due course and are expected to follow Islamic funeral rites.
