Professor Samuel Kobina Annin, a government statistician, has emphatically stated that the availability of food on the market does not encompass food security.
“Availability is one of the dimensions by which food security is measured,” he said.
In an interview with Joy news Prof. Annin explains that food security is not just about availability of food, but includes the extent of balanced diet consumption, proportion of one’s income spent on food, the people’s preference of the available food items as well as the availability of food.
His remark is in response to the ministry of food and agriculture’s decision to sell food delivered from rural areas at lower prices than those found on the market.
The action taken by the ministry does not necessarily curb the pressure on food items in the market; if the preference of the people is not what is provided, then it makes no difference.
