The organizers of the Fix the Country protest, Democracy Hub Ghana, have announced that they have applied to the Supreme Court to challenge an injunction application obtained by the Ghana Police Service. This injunction aims to prevent them from carrying out their planned month-long protest in December.
During a news conference held in Accra, Jeffrey Williams, the convener of the Fix the Country movement, reiterated the reasons behind their protest. He also revealed that they have made adjustments to their initial schedule, moving the protest to December 31, 2023.
Williams emphasized that the group understands the frustration and the yearning for a better future. He highlighted that the Christmas season symbolizes hope and renewal. In response to the unjust injunction, he stated that the organizers have taken legal action by applying to the Supreme Court to challenge these obstacles to their constitutional right to protest.
“We believe in the strength of our case and are committed to defending the democratic principles we hold. As a result of the injunction, we are forced to make significant adjustments to the schedule we announced previously.” Williams said.
The Ghana Police Service has applied to the High Court, requesting an order to halt the demonstrations organized by three groups. This action is being taken due to the police’s busy schedule during the Christmas festivities.
However, despite the police’s efforts, the groups have expressed their determination to proceed with the demonstration on December 30-31. They have assured the public that further details regarding the demonstration will be provided in due course.
