First Lady Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has called for sustained efforts to end fistula, saying any woman suffering from the condition should be treated promptly and reintegrated into society.
Pledging her continued support to the global campaign to end fistula, the First Lady emphasized the need to step up measures aimed at ensuring new cases of fistula are prevented.
Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, address, encouraged Ghanaians to intensify education on Obstetric fistula in the country. Adding that mul- malnutrition during pregnancy needs to be addressed because is the surest way to prevent obstetric fistula during childbirth.
Speaking at the 2024 commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula under the theme “Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula in Ghana, she opined that women must access antenatal during delivery and Post delivery, pregnancy and childbirth should be a good experience for women.
Dr. Wilfred Ochan, UNFPA County Representative said UNFPA last year championed an initiative called the partnership end Obstetric Fistula as part of efforts to national support to eliminate obstetric Fistula in Ghana.
According to him, the partnership has collectively mobilized and leveraged 405,000.00 dollars and increased its membership from 7 to 13.
He said after the launch of the partnership to End Obstetric Fistula in Ghana, there has been a 200% increase in the number of cases repaired.
