Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully extinguished a fire that broke out at the Estate Block of the University of Ghana in Accra on the evening of Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
The Estate Block, located near the popular Bush Canteen, serves as a warehouse.
According to DOI Alex King Nartey, who spoke in a video shared on the GNFS Facebook page, the fire started around 9:00 p.m. Firefighters swiftly responded and brought the blaze under control within an hour using four fire tenders.
“Because of the gaseous nature of the substances there, we had to marshal tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe. The fire is 90% extinguished. We are now preventing further spread. We had four fire tenders at the scene,” DOI Nartey stated.
He further disclosed that the fire destroyed approximately 20 fridges, freezers, and spare parts stored in the facility.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the rising number of fire outbreaks across the country. Earlier this year, major fires devastated the Agbogbloshie Market and Kumasi Magazine, with several smaller incidents also reported.
GNFS data indicates a troubling trend, with 5,596 fire cases recorded between January and November 2024—marking a 6.43% increase from the 5,258 incidents reported during the same period in 2023.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the University of Ghana fire, but investigations are ongoing.
