The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims that it is pursuing a third-term agenda for President John Dramani Mahama, affirming its commitment to Ghana’s Constitution and democratic norms.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey stated that the party would not support any attempt to amend the Constitution to extend presidential tenure, regardless of its current parliamentary majority.
Kwetey emphasized that Ghana’s strong record of democratic transitions in sub-Saharan Africa is grounded in adherence to constitutional term limits. He stressed that the NDC would not take any action that undermines the nation’s constitutional framework.
He added that President Mahama has already clarified his position, shutting down discussions suggesting a third-term ambition. “We should never encourage any situation that disrupts our constitutional stipulations. The president has spoken clearly on the matter and did well by shutting down such conversations so it does not appear he is entertaining them,” Kwetey said.
Despite the party’s substantial parliamentary majority, Kwetey reiterated that it would not exploit this advantage to push through constitutional changes for political or personal gain. He further highlighted that Ghana’s democratic credentials remain a model for the sub-region.
“The party itself, which has promised to ensure that we do what is right for the country, must, in this spirit of reset, use its parliamentary strength to do what benefits the nation—not to make one person happy,” he explained.
Kwetey concluded by noting that Ghana’s consistent commitment to democratic transition is a hallmark that must be preserved and protected.
